The Woman in the Mirror

In my Welcome post, I began to discuss with you my inspiration and intention behind creating this blog. Because long, drawn out posts usually don’t hold my attention, I am going to keep this short and “to the point” and then elaborate on more of the specifics in later posts as time goes on.

Up until 4 years ago, I spent over half of my life in the darkness of addiction. I know what it’s like to not care if I lived or died (and that’s an incredibly scary place to be). Although the magnitude of that statement was completely lost on me as long as had something in my system that aided me in staying in oblivion. I functioned (if you can call it that) on a minimum of 3 bottles of wine a day and as many opiates as I could find and/or afford on a given day. I could go on and I will in later posts but I don’t live there anymore. By the Grace of God. I wanted to start this blog because once I got sober, I realized that “we” are all very much alike. By we, I mean, people. I’m primarily talking about women, but I’ve noticed and recognized the qualities that I’m referring to in men also.

We all walk around with a gaping hole that we are desperate to fill. Some use drugs, some use achievement and recognition, some use relationships or gossip or shopping or whatever. What happened to us? What happened to the child that got so excited at her/his reflection? That child didn’t criticize her fat rolls or the dimples on her butt! As a matter of fact, everyone ooh’ed and ahh’d over how stinking cute those were!

When anyone asks me how I finally achieved sobriety (everyone, including myself, had given up hope) I tell them, “I looked at the unrecognizable woman in the mirror and FINALLY said- I deserve better!” And thank God, that day…I believed her.

If you or someone you love is struggling, do not give up! All is NOT lost and one moment of clarity (and self-love) can – quite literally – bring you back to life!
