Understanding Identity Recalibration for Women Entrepreneurs

Published by

on

There is a statistic making the rounds that I can’t stop thinking about.  And the implication sums it up for midlife women entrepreneurs.

Three out of four women who change careers spend more than a year thinking about it before they ever make a move.

One in four…more than three years.

Three years.

Think about that.

If this were simply burnout…it wouldn’t linger that long.

If it were simply money…a raise would fix it.

If it were simply hormones…the story would be completely different.

But women aren’t leaving because they’re impulsive.  Again, three years.

They’re leaving because they’ve been privately living with misalignment for years.

And here’s the part I think we’ve misunderstood.  I don’t think they’re only misaligned with their careers.  I think they’re misaligned with the identity that chose those careers.

We’ve Been Diagnosing the Symptom

The career isn’t the problem.

The relationship isn’t the problem.

Even the business often isn’t the problem.

Those are just where the cracks begin to show.  Where the misalignment becomes visible.

The deeper question is:

Who made those decisions?

Was she surviving? Trying to earn approval?  Trying to be good?  Trying to be safe?

Trying to prove she mattered?

Because if she was…

Of course today’s version of you feels trapped.

Your Nervous System Isn’t Wrong

I’m grateful that women are finally learning about the nervous system. Truly.

For years we have blamed ourselves, and now we are beginning to understand our bodies have wisdom.

Beautiful.

Necessary.

But I think (and this has become a hill I will die on) we are still stopping one layer too soon.

What if your nervous system isn’t dysregulated?

What if it’s accurate?

What if it’s doing what it was designed to do?

What if it’s responding exactly as it should…

To a life your soul slowly stopped recognizing years ago?

That’s different.

Now we’re not trying to fix our bodies.

We’re trying to understand what it’s been faithfully communicating.

Maybe it’s trying to tell us something.  And maybe we’ve been conditioned not to listen.

The Silent Year That Was Never Indecision

Most women think:

“I’ve been stuck.”

I don’t.

I think we’ve been closing a chapter.  Silently.  Internally.  Privately wrestling with guilt and confusion.

Without anyone else noticing. Because that’s what we’re taught to do.

Don’t rock the boat. Don’t make a fuss.  Keep quiet about it, and maybe it will go away.

Identify the problem before bringing it up to anyone.

Here’s what I know…

Every chapter ends twice.

First…

Inside you.

And then…and only when we’ve taken every other perceivable action…

Around you.

The invisible ending always comes first.  Cue the paralyzing confusion.

The life we’re trying to leave isn’t the first thing that’s changing.

The woman living it is.

The Sooner We Admit That The More Free We Will Be

This isn’t why I created The Portal.

But it’s who I created it for.

The woman everyone else thinks is simply considering a career change.

When really…

She’s experiencing an identity recalibration.

Not reinvention.

Not reinvention.

Recalibration.  Reclamation.  Remembering.

Because you cannot reclaim something that wasn’t already yours.

We are not becoming someone new.

We’re remembering the woman who existed before performance convinced us she had to become someone else.

It’s beautiful.  And painful.  And disorienting.  And yes, sometimes terrifying.

But it’s also sacred.  And necessary.

An Open Invitation

If you’ve been sitting with a knowing…a sensation in your belly that started off small but has now nearly taken over.

For months.  Maybe even years.

Please stop calling yourself indecisive.

The statistics tell us you’re not alone.

My experience tells me you’re not broken.

And your body may be telling you something your mind has been too afraid to admit.

Perhaps…

The chapter closed a long time ago.

You’re simply waiting for permission to believe it.

You don’t need my permission.

You never did.

You are the permission.

But if you’d like a guide while your outer life catches up to what your soul already knows…
