Midlife Doesn’t Give You Your Power. It Reveals What Was Consuming It.

Everyone is celebrating the powerful midlife woman. Almost nobody is talking about what she has to stop being before that power becomes available.

There is a very encouraging conversation happening about women in midlife right now.

We are finally hearing words like:

  • Power.
  • Clarity.
  • Momentum.
  • Wisdom.
  • Leadership.
  • Lived experience.
  • Emotional intelligence.

And after generations of women being treated as though relevance somehow had an expiration date?

I am here for every damn bit of it.

But I want to take the conversation somewhere deeper. Because I don’t believe a woman suddenly gets her power at 40. Or 50. Or after menopause.

I think midlife simply makes it increasingly difficult to keep spending that power on being someone she no longer is.

And that? Is a completely different conversation.

Your Power Was Never Missing

Maybe you spent your whole life being agreeable.

Being needed.

Being excellent.

Being the woman who always had the answer.

Being easy to work with.

Being low-maintenance.

Being indispensable.

Maybe you spent the bulk of your days managing how everyone else experienced you…secretly terrified of a misstep.

Maybe you became so exceptionally good at performing competence that no one – not even you – noticed how far you’d wandered from yourself.

Then one day, the performance stopped working.

You didn’t suddenly become weak. There was something much deeper happening. An innermost, subconscious part of you was finally finished paying for belonging with self-abandonment.

That’s the part of the midlife power conversation I think we’re missing.

Power isn’t something you acquire.

👉🏼 Sometimes power is simply what’s left when you stop leaking it into identities that have completed their assignment.

I Know What It Looks Like to Be Exceptionally Capable – and Completely Lost

For more than two decades, I worked as an ICU nurse.

I could work a twelve-hour shift surrounded by life-and-death decisions, cardiac emergencies, high-tech equipment, frightened families, and the kind of clinical pressure that demands you stay functional whether you feel functional or not.

Fueled by my deep, devout love for health science, I was very good at what I did. I fed off of the chaos. It felt like home.

And I knew how to perform under pressure. Very, very well.

On the outside, I looked capable.

Inside?

I had absolutely no idea who I was.

I had survived a childhood marked by trauma, addiction, instability, and loss. So, I adapted.

I became the overachiever.

The perfectionist.

The people-pleaser.

The woman who always had an answer.

Because somewhere along the way, I had learned that usefulness made me safer. Competence made me safer. Distance made me safer.

And performance?

Performance kept anyone from getting close enough to discover what I secretly feared the most:

If you really knew me, you might not like what you saw.

I could explain every trauma pattern I exhibited… clinically.

I understood physiology. I understood behavior.

But understanding why I behaved the way I did was not the same thing as knowing who I was underneath it.

I had run so far for so long that I couldn’t find her… or me… or whoever was supposed to be there… anymore.

Then the Identity Could No Longer Hold

By the time I reached 40, the pressure had become unbearable. I was medicating to get out of bed in the mornings, just to numb the sheer dread in my chest… before driving to the hospital to run ICU codes for 12 hours straight.

I was broken, depressed, and running on absolute fumes. (And wine & opiates.) But I couldn’t let anyone know. No one! I could feel the cracks starting to show, and I kept pushing harder. I was a walking time bomb. I couldn’t let the detonation happen.

I simply kept pushing, because pushing was what I knew.

I knew how to override exhaustion. I knew how to smile. I knew how to function. I knew how to dazzle and delight with my extensive knowledge.

I knew how to make sure nobody knew.

Until eventually…I couldn’t. My life completely broke open.

At the time, I didn’t think:

Wonderful. My true identity is emerging.

Please.

It felt like hell. It felt like punishment. It felt like everything I had spent years holding together was suddenly lying at my feet.

But looking back?

The breakdown wasn’t proof that I had failed at being the woman I had become. It was evidence that I could no longer survive as her.

And that distinction eventually changed my life.

I Had to Become My Own First Client

When the rubble settled enough for me to breathe, I made myself a promise:

If I get through this, I will use every ounce of science, Spirit, and strength I know to make sure another woman doesn’t have to walk through this kind of darkness believing she’s fundamentally defective.

But first?

I had to figure out how to help myself. And I was not interested in bypassing what had happened with positive affirmations and pretty spiritual language. I needed biological proof. My science-loving brain wanted depth.

So I went back into the disciplines that helped me understand human behavior and change:

Neuroscience.

Behavioral psychology.

NLP.

Hypnosis.

Subconscious reprogramming.

Trauma patterns.

And alongside them, I explored spirituality, energetics, and eventually Human Design–not as laboratory science, but as a deeply useful framework for examining how I made decisions, where I had been conditioned, and what happened when I stopped outsourcing my own authority.

Human Design became a final piece of the mystery for me. It wasn’t because a chart gave me permission to exist. But because it reflected something I had spent years trying not to believe:

My intuition had not abandoned me.

I had abandoned it.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Every time I knew something wasn’t right and talked myself out of it. Every time I chose what looked sensible over what felt true. Every time I assumed someone else knew more about my life than I did.

I wasn’t learning how to become someone new.

I was learning how to stop overriding the woman who had been there all along. And I found her… or me, the woman with a true purpose that was essentially buried by conditioning.

This Is Why “Midlife Women Are Powerful” Isn’t Enough for Me

I love the celebration, but we don’t want or need another pep talk. Telling a woman she’s powerful doesn’t automatically return her power to her.

Especially when that power is still tangled up in decades of conditioning.

She can hear:

You’re brilliant.

And still censor herself.

You’re experienced.

And still ask everyone else’s opinion before making a decision.

You’re ready.

And still disappear the moment visibility feels vulnerable.

You should start the business.

And then recreate the exact pressure she spent twenty years trying to escape.

That’s not a lack of power.

It’s an identity conflict.

The woman who wants freedom is trying to build alongside the woman who survived by performing.

And until we address that…

More empowerment language just becomes another expectation she feels she’s failing to live up to.

The Business Will Reveal Who Is Actually Leading

This is why entrepreneurship becomes such a powerful mirror.

We leave corporate because we’re exhausted by someone else’s expectations. Then we start our own business…

…and work sixteen hours a day.

We leave a culture where we had to prove our value. Then obsess over likes, followers, revenue, and whether anyone thinks we’re credible.

We leave someone else’s blueprint. Then buy seven new ones.

We wanted freedom. But the identity that knew how to create safety through performance came with us. So the business begins exposing everything.

Visibility.

Worthiness.

Money.

Decision-making.

Approval.

Leadership.

And suddenly we think:

Maybe I’m not cut out for entrepreneurship.

I have thought versions of that too. But eventually I understood:

The business wasn’t creating the problem. It was revealing the identity running it.

Regulation Is Not the Destination

I’m also grateful that nervous-system language has moved into the mainstream. We desperately needed that conversation. But I am going on the record saying:

I think we’re confusing the tool with the destination. Everyone is teaching women how to regulate.

My question is:

Regulate toward what?

Because if you calm yourself down only so you can tolerate an identity you’ve already outgrown…

We have completely missed the point. We are ignoring the signal. We are essentially conditioning all over again.

The goal isn’t simply to make your body calmer. The goal is to create enough internal safety that you can finally hear what it has been trying to communicate.

Then comes the harder work.

Truth.

Choice.

Identity.

Recalibration.

Because sometimes our discomfort is not evidence that we’re doing life badly. Sometimes it is remarkably accurate information about how badly our lives truly fit the women we are meant to become.

That’s recalibration. That’s the point. And our bodies are desperately trying to help us out.

We don’t need to fix it, medicate it, or regulate it away.

We need to listen.

Individualized Over Standardized

This is another reason I believe coaching itself is changing. The profession is growing, and women dominate it.

More women are arriving with decades of professional and lived experience that cannot be reduced to another cookie-cutter five-step blueprint.

Good. Because the woman I work with does not need me to hand her an identity. She has spent enough of her life living inside identities other people handed her. She needs a process that helps her discover her own.

That’s how I use Human Design inside my work.

Not:

“Here’s your chart. Let me tell you who you are.”

But:

“Let’s examine your design together and notice what you already recognize as true.”

Discovered by her… not read to her. That difference matters enormously to me.

When a woman can look at her own chart and recognize herself, that’s not just guidance. That’s confirmation.

Because the goal of my work is never dependency. It’s self-trust. And ultimately, self-remembrance.

I Had to Go First

There is something I understand now that I couldn’t possibly have understood while my life was breaking apart.

I had to go first. I wasn’t specially chosen for suffering. And my pain doesn’t make me superior.

But the woman I am today could only teach this work honestly after living the questions herself.

I know what the ashes feel like.

I know what it’s like to think:

This cannot possibly be my beautiful beginning.

I know what it feels like when every external marker suggests you should be grateful…

while something inside you is screaming that you cannot keep living this way.

And I know the moment when the question changes.

From:

“What the hell is wrong with me?” (which was my mantra for quite a while, so I get it.)

To:

“Who am I underneath all of this?”

That question began everything.

Maybe Midlife Isn’t When Your Power Peaks

Maybe it’s when your tolerance for abandoning it collapses.

Maybe the woman leaving corporate isn’t suddenly courageous.

Maybe she finally stopped negotiating with what she’d known for years.

Maybe the woman launching the coaching business isn’t chasing some shiny second act.

Maybe decades of experience have finally become too meaningful to keep locked inside a role that no longer fits.

Maybe the woman becoming “more herself” isn’t reinventing anything. Maybe…just maybe… she’s reclaiming.

And perhaps that’s why this moment feels so consequential.

Because once a woman experiences success as herself…performance becomes very hard to return to.

I know it did for me.

This Is the Work

This is exactly what sits underneath The Sacred Unraveling™ Intensive, Midlife Calling by Design™, and ultimately The Portal: Sacred Unraveling™.

Identity first.

Human Design as a mirror.

Business as expression.

Self-trust as the foundation.

This is not a curriculum that tells you how to become me. Or anyone else for that matter.

This is a process that helps you discover what is unmistakably you.

Because I don’t want to build another generation of women who know how to follow a better blueprint.

I want women who can create their own.

Women who know how they’re designed to lead.

Women who can recognize conditioning before building another life on top of it.

Women whose businesses become extensions of their truth… not elaborate new places to hide from it.

An Open Invitation From the Ashes

If you’re reading this from the Sacred Middle of something that feels like an ending… I won’t insult you by telling you it’s easy. I won’t hand you a silver lining while you’re still burning.

I’ve been there.

So I’ll sit beside you in the ashes and tell you what I desperately needed someone to tell me:

This is not the end.

And you do not have to know exactly who you’re becoming yet.

You simply have to become willing to stop performing who you’re not. That is enough for today.

The rest?

We discover together. Your power was never waiting for you at 50. It was never waiting inside a business. It wasn’t hiding inside Human Design.

It was yours all along.

The unraveling simply removes everything that convinced you otherwise.

And sometimes…

The ashes are exactly where you find the first evidence of who survived the fire.

With truth, disruption, and deep reverence for the woman beneath the roles,

Coach Shannon
